John Morris Box was
born 7 August 1780 in Laurens County, South Carolina to Robert and Mary
Williams Box. His sons were Rolen W., William S., John A., Samuel C., and
James E. Box.
As a colonist under
David G. Burnet’s contract, he petitioned the Mexican Government for a league
of land located in what is now Houston County, Texas. His sons received grants for land in the general area. A
log fort was built to protect them from the Indians. The fort was known
as Fort Box and the creek near by as Box Creek. John Box died July 12,
1842 in Houston County, Texas.
