STEPHEN WILLIAMS Born in North Carolina Died in 1848 near Jasper, Texas
Stephen Williams was originally from North Carolina. He fought in both the American and Texas
revolutions. Only 17 years old when he
enlisted in the Continental Army in 1777, Williams fought in the Battle of
Briar Creek in Georgia and in the Battles of Camden and Eutaw Springs in South
Carolina. After the American victory, he
and his wife settled in Louisiana.
During the War of 1812, he served again.
About 1830, he moved to East Texas with his sons. Though he was 75 when the Texas Revolution
begin, the lifelong soldier joined three of his grandsons in Ben Milam’s forces
along with one of his sons at the Siege of Bexar in late 1835. In January 1836, he accepted a discharge from
the Texian forces and returned home to Bevil’s Settlement, near Jasper. He died there in 1848, a veteran of two
successful struggles for independence.
Stephen now lies in state at the State Cemetery in Austin, Texas.
