WILLIAM WOODSON WRIGHT Born in 1818 in Oglethorpe, Georgia
William Woodson Wright was born in Oglethorpe, Georgia in
1818. It was not long after that, his
family moved to Alabama where he received his early education. His first marriage was to Sarah Waters, who
lived only 2 ˝ years after the marriage.
He entered into a business of merchandise with a Dr. Martin and was
apparently very successful.
In the year 1843, he married Ghasky Hunter, who family
tradition says was the family maid during the first marriage.
His third marriage was to Annie Weiner in 1889.
In 1837, William Wright came to Colorado County, Texas to
take guardianship of the estate of a Claiborne Wright in Colorado County. In about a year or so, he returned with his
brother, George Washington Wright, and a Thomas Wright, to buy and receive land
in Colorado County, Texas. Apparently,
his mother and father moved to Colorado County also, as Lucy Wright was listed
as a widow in the 1860 Colorado County, Texas census.
In the 1850’s, William Wright moved to Nueces County, Texas
where he bought about 20,000 acres close to the King Ranch. He prospered in wealth, health and family
growth. He was a peace officer, and from
some written indications was a center of the mail route, stagecoach and Texas
Rangers stop.
He was well respected as one who had a strong character, a
character that history demanded of a man who helped “tame the Nueces Strip”
(George Durham) during the 1850’s through the 1890’s. Indeed he left his mark that is still there today. Much of the family still lives in that area
and are contributing members of Nueces County, Texas. This is a heritage of which I am proud!
